We’re excited to announce that Llar Trad Fest 2024 will be held from June 28 to July 1 in La Pola Somiedu and Caunéu, set within the beautiful Somiedu Natural Park in Asturias, a biosphere reserve. Offering diverse workshop spaces amidst natural surroundings and hosting dance and concert venues, LLAR is set to provide an immersive experience in this natural paradise of Northern Spain. This region's dedication to preserving its natural and cultural heritage perfectly aligns with LLAR's mission to intertwine culture and environment.

We have three types of tickets:


1—our LLAR TRAD FEST MASTERCLASS PASS, which gives you access to 3 days of expert tuition in music, song or dance (no musical experience needed, join our beginner dance or song masterclass), 4 nights of concerts (inc Nueche en danza), access to sessions and talks and a daily pass to our Asturian rhythm warmup

Masterclasses

Our masterclasses provide practical, ear-based learning opportunities from more than 30 esteemed traditional musicians. Focused on the Celtic traditions, these sessions are designed to deepen your musical understanding and skill without relying on written scores. They're an excellent chance for musicians of all levels to learn directly from experts in an engaging and straightforward manner.

No musical experience? Don’t worry this is the perfect opportunity to learn about Asturian culture and meet new friends in our beginner dance or singing classes!

Dance

Noche de Danza is an open evening of dance that forms part of Llar, offering a chance for everyone, regardless of their experience, to engage with traditional dances. This community-focused event, open to the public, invites people to immerse themselves in the cultural tapestry of dance, enhanced by the authentic sounds of live musicians.

Concerts

LLAR's concert series fuses traditional and modern music, highlighting Asturian and international artists. Each concert creates an atmosphere where Asturias' rhythms and melodies offer a sensory experience of the region's musical heritage. These events are designed to be more than performances, aiming to foster a sense of community and connection through music.

    Felpeyu's enduring appeal lies in their ability to intertwine traditional Asturian elements with innovative musical expressions, making them a cherished highlight of any festival lineup. They have left an indelible mark on the regional and global music scene, enchanting audiences at major festivals across Europe, Canada and Australia, including the Lorient Interceltic Festival, the Ressegna Internazionale di la Zampogna in Scapoli, the Montreal International Celtic Festival, Glasgow’s Celtic Connection and Womadelaide in Australia.

  • Michael McGoldrick

    Monday

    Michael McGoldrick is a multi-instrumentist and composer, he plays the flute, low whistle, bodhan & Irish bagpipes. From Irish parentage, he was born in the UK and is considered one of the finest living flute players in the field of Irish music. McGoldrick was a forming member of Flook, He played on the first two albums of Lúnasa and joined Capercaillie in 1997. He has played regularly for Afro-Celt Sound System and Kate Rusby's band, he now leads the Michael McGoldrick Band.

  • Jean-Michel Veillion

    Sunday

    Jean-Michel is one of the most celebrated traditional flute players in the world, blending Breton and Gaelic influences with Eastern flute styles. He has contributed to groups such as Kornog and Barzaz, and collaborations include Alain Genty, Jacques Pellen & Celtic Procession. Veillon's teaching has cultivated a new generation of flute players, shaping Brittany's musical heritage.

  • Anxo Lorenzo

    Friday

    Anxo Lorenzo a master piper, has had a remarkable career, performing and recording with esteemed artists such as Kathryn Tickell and Carlos Núñez, as well as with groups like Lúnasa and The Chieftains. His talent has been showcased at prestigious festivals including Celtic Connections, WOMAD, and Ortigueira.. Beyond his traditional roots, Anxo has worked with artists from diverse genres, including Marta Sanchez for the Vuelta a España 2016 theme song, Monica Molina, and Ska-P.

  • María Vázquez y Pau Santirso

    Saturday

    With a career spanning more than two decades, María and Pau are renowned dancers and dance teachers of traditional Asturian music. Their passion for folklore has led them to participate in prestigious international festivals, including the Lorient Interceltic and events in Bovel, Toulousse, Glasgow and Girona. Winners on five occasions of the City of Oviedo Folklore Competition and Exhibition, their experience and dedication have made them a benchmark in the genre. With workshops that fuse the richness of Asturian tradition with touches of modernity, María and Pau offer a unique and enriching experience for all lovers of Asturian dance and culture.

  • Xisco Feijoó

    Saturday

    A well known singer, award-winning dancer, choreographer, television presenter, teacher at the ETRAD school of music and coordinator for the vocal section of SonDeSeu folk orchestra. Xisco has dedicated more than thirty years to the recovery and documentation of Galician traditions and collaborated on more than twenty albums and shows with internationally renowned artists, such as Mercedes Peón, Xosé Manuel Budiño, Carlos Núñez, Kepa Junquera, Berrogüetto and Rodrigo Romaní.

  • Josephine Marsh and Liz Doherty

    Sunday

    Bringing together two great Irish musicians Josephine Marsh and Liz Doherty, this performance is set to be onehof the highlights of the festival. Liz Doherty, renowned for her distinctive fiddle style influenced by Scottish and Cape Breton traditions, has performed with notable acts like Riverdance and the RTÉ orchestras, and is celebrated for her deep solo repertoire. Josephine Marsh, an accomplished accordion, fiddle, and whistle player, is known for her evocative original compositions which have earned her the TG4 Composer of the Year. They will be joined by Alberto's Ablanedo on the bouzouki.

  • Xosé “Ambás" y Ramsés Ilesies

    Saturday

    Xosé "Ambás" and Ramsés Ilesies bring a unique blend of music and culture to the festival. Xosé Antón Fernández “Ambás,” a foundational figure in Asturian music for over thirty years, has established prominent folk groups like N'Arba and Tuenda. He is also known for launching “Camín de Cantares,” an ethnomusicology series on public TV. Ramsés Ilesies, a history graduate from the University of Uviéu, has dedicated 20 years to documenting Asturias' oral traditions. Together with Ambás, he helped create ATOAM, a significant archive of oral tradition, and has contributed to revitalizing this heritage through documentary series like Canta l'Uxu and Camín de Cantares.

  • Finn Moore & Anna-Wendy Stevenson

    Monday

    Fin Moore and Anna-Wendy Stevenson are set to deliver a performance that showcases the best of Scottish musical tradition. Fin Moore, a master piper known for his expertise with the Highland, Border, and Scottish Small Pipes, has crafted over a thousand pipe sets globally with his father, Hamish. He performs with the Highland-based dance group Dannsa and the Pipe Quartet Seudan. Anna-Wendy Stevenson, a celebrated fiddler and composer, is known for her dynamic performances with various Scottish ensembles and her role in 'An Tinne,' a cultural project connecting Scotland and Australia. Her significant contributions to music education have earned her multiple awards at the University of the Highlands and Islands. They wil be joined by Gonzalo Llao on the Bouzouki.

  • Santi Galguera

    Saturday

    Santi, a musicology graduate from the University of Oviedo, began his musical journey at age five as a bagpiper with Banda Gaites Llacín. Notably, he performed solo in the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York in 2014. Apart from group performances, he pursued personal projects, playing the flute with the group Seu and collaborating with artists like Carlos Núñez. In dance, Santi founded El Corveru de Ribeseya and later the Ethnographic Group L'Oriente in Llanes, serving as both director and teacher. He has also worked as a choreographer and teacher at Encuentro con los Maestros, and offered lectures on traditional dances and choreographic research, including a notable project for Mexico’s Ministry of Culture in 2021.

  • Simon Bradley, Borja Baragaño & Julio Rodríguez

    As members of the Asturian supergroup Llan de Cubel, Simon Bradley, Borja Baragaño, and Julio Rodríguez stand at the forefront of traditional Asturian music's cultural revival. Their collaboration as a trio affords a rare chance to experience these virtuosos in a more personal and intimate performance showcasing their individual virtuosity and collective chemistry. Borja enchants with the Asturian bagpipes and flute, Simon, one of the most influential fiddle players in Asturias, brings a profound expertise in Celtic music to the mix. Complementing them, Julio on the bouzouki provides a rich, resonant foundation that anchors the group's intricate melodies. Together, they present a chance to experience the subtleties and depth of Asturian music up close.

  • Cris Zagaleja

    Saturday

    Cris is a celebrated pandereta player and instructor, She has pioneered her own teaching techniques, honouring the instrument's historical significance and complexity, especially in its connection to women's cultural heritage. Cris is devoted to preserving and documenting this musical form, recording vocal repertoires from areas such as Valladolid and Segovia, and has made a notable contribution to the field with her publication, "La pandereta en Castilla y León: técnica y repertorio”.

  • José Manuel Tejedor Trio

    Monday

    José Manuel Tejedor is one of the most renowned and promising pipers in Asturias. With four albums behind him, and having won the Macallan Trophy (now MacCrimmon) three times, he has collaborated with internationally renowned musicians such as Phil Cunningahm, Michael McGoldrick, Duncan Chisholm, etc. He has a long experience in teaching Asturian bagpipes, playing also whistles in his different projects.

    He is accompanied by Richard García (keyboards) and Dani Álvarez (Bouzouki and flute) on trio.

  • Marie Le Goff y Alexandre Romieux

    Saturday

    Marie Le Goff and Alexandre Romieux unite their impressive talents for a captivating performance of traditional Breton dance and song. With over 25 years of experience, Marie leads the esteemed Cercle Celtique du Croisty "Danserien ar Vro Pourlet," and has performed on prestigious stages from France to Singapore. She is also a revered dance teacher, passionate about sharing Breton dance with students of all levels. Alexandre, a native of Lorient and a seasoned performer in both dance and Breton singing, has graced numerous fest-noz and festivals across Brittany. Together, Marie and Alexandre deliver an energetic and engaging showcase that celebrates the vibrant spirit of Brittany.

  • Gonzalo Llao and Julio Rodríguez

    The new duo of Gonzalo Llao and Julio Rodríguez marks an exciting evolution in Asturian folk music, captivating audiences with their dual bouzouki arrangements and innovative sound. This act combines the rhythmic intricacies and layered textures of traditional music with original compositions by Gonzalo, providing a fresh perspective on vocal arrangements. Their performances are a vibrant blend of the familiar and the new, promising an engaging experience for all who listen. With their combined talent and creativity, Gonzalo and Julio are an exciting new act that’s not to be missed.

If you're unable to attend our masterclasses but still wish to experience the music, consider our evening concert options. We offer both a four-night package and individual concert passes, allowing you to enjoy top Celtic music performers in the intimate and magical setting of Somiedo National Park.

From Friday 28th June to Monday 1st July you will have the opportunity to share experiences, knowledge and, above all, music and identity with a beautiful bunch of national and international artists in a unique place: Somiedo, cradle of the vaqueiros d'alzada, one of the strongest communities of the Asturian tradition. The Llar Trad Fest invites you to live unique experiences around traditional music, which you can also access without previous knowledge. All we ask of you is the desire to learn and to be part of the great folk music family.

At Llar Trad Fest all the teachers are professionals, and we do not have sponsorships. To cover all the expenses that this initiative generates, the normal thing would be to offer you to buy a ticket at a fixed cost, but what we want is to give strength to the community, and to give strength to you too as a member of it and supporter of this cultural initiative. That's why we can offer you to be part of this experience at no cost, just by making a voluntary donation that will go directly to the artists who make this dream possible. Your support will be essential for the success of Llar Trad Fest and for the continuity of our efforts to promote Asturian culture.

Llar Masterclass

Each masterclass ticket LLAR TRAD FEST PASS grants access to three days of comprehensive classes with multiple expert teachers in each instrument. These masterclasses immerse participants in Asturian traditional music while incorporating internationally-renowned guest teachers from the world of Celtic and traditional music.

Our day begins with an hour-long Asturian rhythm workshop for all, delving into the region's unique musical rhythms, sounds, and patterns influenced by its dancing and piping traditions. Following this, participants will attend individual classes with a new teacher each lesson, focusing on oral learning methods. During the three days, each student will have classes with each individual teacher participating in their specific instrument, plus connection to the dancing and singing teachers in the Asturian rhythm hour. Students will gain diverse insights, from specific techniques and melodies to interpretative skills, harmonies, and stylistic nuances, ensuring a rich learning experience for beginners, intermediates, and advanced participants alike. This structure allows students to absorb a variety of teaching styles and perspectives from each of our expert instructors and guarantees a well-rounded exposure to different facets of Asturian and Celtic music traditions. Limited to 12-15 students per class for focused attention and an intimate learning experience.

La Nueche en Danza is an open evening of dance that forms part of Llar, offering an opportunity for everyone, regardless of experience, to engage with traditional dances. Our instructors and assistants come together to perform live music on stage, which serves as the basis for a series of dances from the Asturian, Galician, Castilian and Breton traditions. This community event, open to the public, invites people to immerse themselves in dance, enhanced by the authentic sounds of live musicians.

Attendees will enjoy a vivid display of traditional dances, reflecting the unique rhythms and steps that characterise each tradition.

Masterclass: Dance/Baille/Pandereta

In our dance masterclasses, students will experience the different types of dancing styles, steps, rhythms and techniques from across the Celtic nations. With instructors from Asturies, Galica, and Brittany you will learn a variety of dances which will come in handy during Nueche en Danza on Saturday night.

Participants will be taught classes by each of our different teachers, ensuring a diverse and comprehensive learning journey for beginners, intermediates and advanced participants alike.
